Karl de Vroomen

Karl de Vroomen, born in London in 1982, creates works that depict familiar objects, animals or people in scenes evocative of unresolved narratives and a sense of déjà vu. Important events seem poised to occur, imbuing these apparently mundane situations with a subtle atmosphere of disquiet or suspense. The artist has said that he wants his paintings to give ‘the apparently innocuous or trivial, significance and meaning.’ These works challenge us to view our surroundings with a heightened sense of imagination, questioning the familiar to re-assess our preconceptions about the nature of our world. These curiously unsettling images simultaneously convey anxiety, hope, and the artist’s love of paint. De Vroomen achieved a distinction from the Newcastle University MFA in 2009, producing a captivating degree show, and has exhibited widely in the UK. In 2009 he won the Hole Editions Postgraduate Print Award, and continues to develop his practise in the North East, being awarded a residency at Newcastle University in 2010.
