Lex Thomas

Lex Thomas gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art at Chelsea College and, since her 2007 graduation, has exhibited all over the country.

In her own words, Lex’s paintings are “obsessively detailed to create an atmosphere of ‘Futuristic Nostalgia’”.

In her work, Thomas creates hyper-realistic creatures that are surreal hybrids of familiar animals. The effect is to strip down familiar ideals, and present virtual landscapes. The pieces are also exploring the boundless aims that science and technology aspire to today.

“Optimism for the future has led to darker realities”, said the artist, and - through depicting mutation in her paintings – she hopes to question the distance between the abyss and idyll. Asking whether her creations are visions of the grotesque or the perfect, Lex amplifies this contrast by combining pixelated skies with more detailed, traditionally painted subjects.
