Darren Baker : New to KounterKulture

Fresh from painting the England squad ahead of the 2010 World Cup, we’re proud to add Yorkshire-based photorealist artist Darren Baker to our roster of artists here at KounterKulture.

Born in 1976, Darren has achieved a huge amount during his relatively short career, the pinnacle of which was his 2008 commission by the Royal British Legion to paint Her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her 85th Birthday. Other notable figures captured on canvas by Baker include HRH Prince Charles, Tony Blair, and sporting stars including Nigel Mansell, Jonny Wilkinson, Prince Naseem and David Ginola.

As well as painting famous figures Darren also has a love of the Still Life genre, with his paintings, pastels and sketches attracting critical praise.

Darren Baker’s next challenge is the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where he has been appointed the official artist. Darren’s own cultural journey to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics began earlier this month with initial sketches, and said he ‘couldn’t wait’ for the Games.

Darren’s aim is to be ‘of my own time whilst also acknowledging the past’.
